Navigating the Web on a mobile handset can be hit or miss, but soon Vodafone users won’t be limited in the sites they choose to surf. Vodafone UK has partnered with Chicago-based Novarra to use its Vision server to power Mobile Internet Services for the mobile carrier, which will provide the transcoding of regular Web sites so that these can be viewed on Mobile browsers.
The Vision server can automatically transform and scale Web pages to fit handset specific capabilities, including screen and memory. The service will be available on more than 150 Vodafone UK handsets through the Vision platform.
“Our partnership with Vodafone UK represents a critical tipping point in the uptake of true mobile internet. There is clear demand from a very large population of users,” stated Bruce Simpson, COO at Novarra. “Our global operator deployments provide valuable insights into consumer usage patterns and portal integration. Mobile and desktop web usage are similar but there are differences. The ‘long tail’ represents more than 70% of the traffic but mobile-relevant usage is also emerging.”
hasn’t this broken every mobile site going? Also contradicts all the fine work Vodafone put into W3C compliance.
