Windows Media for iPhone from Glide Mobile
by Peter Suciu on August 3, 2007

glide.jpgDespite all the hype a few things have been missing from the iPhone… notably some support for Windows Media formats, but this week Glide Mobile announced that it would now offer new format support the iPhone including Windows Media Video and Audio. Among the formats supported for the iPhone: wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi, .divx, .mov, .mp4 and .3gp. Glide supported audio formats for the iPhone include: .wma .wav, .au, .mp3, .m4a, .aiff, .aac and .ac3.

“The EDGE network is not ideal for the cutting edge iPhone,” said TransMedia Chairman and CEO, Donald Leka. “Glide compensates by automatically providing lower and higher resolution versions of your video and audio files optimized for both EDGE and Wi-Fi access.”

All of these supported formats include EDGE and Wi-Fi network versions.

haha… Goto the Glide link with your iphone and guess what you get? A blank screen with a message: “flash required”! Not really their fault per se (Apple get with the game plan!!!), but if you have an iphone oriented product, your home page should at least load with it!

Ok, at the risk of being annoying (well more annoying), I’ll follow-up my previous post. http://glidemobile.com wasn’t much better of an experience. I sent an e-mail to the Glide people and I hope they read it. Here’s the relevant portion:

2. Mobile crunch recommended a second site, this
page offers sign in or register with no hints to
what you would be registering for.

3. If you decide to register blindly anyway, the
first screen asks you to select a plan.
Fortunately there’s a button to get more info on
the plans. Unfortunately, that link does nothing
on the iPhone.

So this is where I’m stopped at this point. It’s
clear to me no one on your team bothered to try
out the basics before pushing out iphone
functionality. Let me know when you REALLY
support the iPhone and I’d love to try it out.

Maybe I’m being overly critical, but it seems most other web sites I’ve visited work better than this “mobile” companies web site. I wonder if they will get serious about their iPhone support? There are a couple hundred thousand users out there waiting for someone to make the first really usable mobile app for it.

I didn’t register for Glide on my iPhone so I can’t comment on the phone registration issue but I can say that Glide on the iPhone is a great experience. I uploaded hundreds of pictures, a number of videos and mp3s and I can easily view and listen. Can’t wait to upload more stuff.

LOL guess how I visited this site………with my iPhone LOL
