Each month, AdMob, a mobile advertising network, rounds up the data from over 6,000 mobile websites and applications, analyzes it all, and releases their findings in their Mobile Metrics Report. In the September report, AdMob determined that the iPhone had become the #4 handset worldwide by count of ads requested. In the October release, the iPhone has skyrocketed all the way to #1.

Note that these rankings are not directly representative of sales numbers; while AdMob’s ad network is wide enough that these numbers can provide an accurate picture of usage trends, they don’t necessarily prove that one handset is outselling another.

September vs October Worldwide handset rankings:

Within the Top 5, the only major change is the iPhones sudden surge. Below that however, notice the BlackBerry 8100s sudden disappearance from the list - it has shifted down to #11 (not shown in image), sitting just below the BlackBerry 8300. Why might this be? Well, the 8100 is a good half year older than the 8300 - chances are, more 8100s are reaching retirement.

September vs October US handset rankings:

In September, we were a bit surprised to see the iPhone sitting all the way down at #7 in the US while it managed to snag the #4 spot worldwide. In October, the iPhone’s rank seems a bit more well aligned with it’s worldwide status, coming in at #2. iPhone requests have more than doubled, allowing it to knock the KRZR down a notch. The rest of the list moves in relation, though as with the worldwide rankings, we see the BlackBerry 8300 climb as the 8100 sinks.

One thing to note with all of these statistics, however, is that the AdMob advertisements embedded into iPhone applications are counted alongside web site statistics. If these same advertisements are not embedded into applications on all of the other platforms, wouldn’t the numbers be skewed in favor of the iPhone? Even if they were given the same real estate across all platforms, third-party applications are a far more significant part of the iPhone than they are for the vast majority of devices; if you own an iPhone, chances are great that you’ve installed (and regularly use) a handful of applications. Can you really say the same about the KRZR, or the Kyocera K24? Wouldn’t this, too, skew things a bit? I’d be interested in seeing how the results change when limited to data gathered from website ad units.

Other interesting tid bits from the report:

29.5% of the traffic that AdMob saw in October came from a smartphone - 59% of that was from devices running Symbian, while 15% ran the iPhone OS

77.7% of devices AdMob saw in October supported Polyphonic ringtones, down from 79.5% in September

As in September, the Danger Sidekick II is the only Sidekick device to break the Top 20, though it has slipped down from #15 to #16.

62.8% of iPhone requests were from the US.

Most popular manufacturer by carrier: AT&T: Apple, MetroPCS: Motorola, Sprint: Samsung, T-Mobile: RIM, Verizon: LG

If you’ve got a couple hours to kill tearing through page upon page of statistics (now including stats for Latin America!), you can find the full report here.

Also, stop thinking about stuff like that, weirdo.

It’s not quite that simple, but it’s pretty close. Like the ZN5, it’s got a QVGA screen (albeit .2″ smaller, at 2.2″), 5 megapixel camera (though with LED flash, rather than Xenon), Stereo Bluetooth, a microSD slot, and WiFi.

While the official announcement fails to mention it, GSMArena reports that there will be two models of the VE66: One with quad-band GSM/EDGE and no 3G (headed to China), and one with UMTS and HSDPA 3G. No word yet on availability beyond “Q4 of 2008″.

Don’t believe it? The proof is in the pudding. The delicious streaming video pudding.

While there are a few apparent framerate stutters, this is by all indications a work in progress for Adobe. The element was embedded on a bare page, without any other elements whatsoever - not exactly how they’re generally served. This is presumably to ensure that this not-yet-optimized version of Flash had as many resources as possible for the demo, but hopefully the final version will be able to handle more than standalone SWF files.

So, what does it bring to the table? Windows 6.1, 3G, aGPS, WiFi (802.11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0, and a 3.0″ touchscreen. Oh, and a massive bezel. In the ever crowding touchscreen smartphone market, I fail to see what the draw here would be; any Incite fans want to tell me what I’m missing?

Whenever the G1 vs iPhone debate gets underway, iPhone purists are quick to flag the G1’s lack of multi-touch input support. Turns out, it might just be able to handle it after all -on the hardware end, at least. Whilst tearing his G1’s workings apart line-by-line, a crafty coder going by RyeBrye came across an interesting artifact. It seems the driver for the Synaptics touchscreen has some code commented out; after recompiling the kernel with said code back in, he was able to track two finger presses at once.

So if the hardware supports it, why no multi-touch on the G1? Patents, presumably. While this in no way actually enables to you to do any kind of multi-touch funnin’ immediately (nothing made for the G1 is currently coded for use with multi-touch, afterall), it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Though we probably won’t see any official support for multi-touch on the G1 any time soon, someone with a bit of spare time to tinker will probably figure out a way to make use of it before too long.

This comes just months after Virgin Mobile purchased post-paid MVNO Helio for $39 million. The terms of that deal already entailed a whole lot of cuts to the Helio team, and I’d imagine that today’s announcement means more jobs lost by that camp.

According to BGR, RIM is already crackin’ away at an LTE device so that it’s ready for launch whenever LTE officially goes live.

For the sake of the folks out there who don’t spend their lives memorizing every last mobile industry acronym: LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution”, and is one of the standards set to make up the next generation of mobile network technologies. In other words, LTE (along with competing technology, WiMax) is 4G. Sprint is siding with WiMax, Verizon and AT&T are going with LTE.

With that in mind, RIM’s rumored work with an LTE handset should come as a surprise to no one. With RIM’s US presence made up predominately by AT&T and Verizon, both of whom are backing LTE, not having a suitable device ready ASAP would be a huge misstep. Hell, I’d be willing to wager that they’re working on at least two of them - one touchscreen (a la Storm), and one in the more traditional candybar form.

T-Mobile said the Samsung Gravity would show up on Nov. 17th and, sure enough, it has arrived.

While the Gravity might not have the same pull as some of the bigger, less wallet-friendly QWERTY handsets on the market, at $49.99 (on a 2-year contract) it’s a decent pick for anyone looking to wear down their thumbs without wearing down their savings. It’s available beginning today in Aqua/White or Lime/Gray at the nearest T-Mo spot.

While the main draw would probably be the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung has also packed in a 1.3-megapixel shooter (with video capture and 4x zoom, though we’re guessing that’s not optical zoom), IM support for AOL/ICQ/Windows Live/Yahoo, T-Mobile myFaves, stereo bluetooth (A2DP), and quad-band radio. For 50 bucks, that’s actually pretty impressive.

Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. If you want Flash on a mobile device, right now you have to settle for a compromised version: Flash Lite. But Adobe is committed to bring the full Flash Player experience to mobile phones, as evidenced by its Open Screen Project. On Monday, at its Adobe MAX developer conference, it will demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year). Product manager Michele Turner tells me:

We will be showing the first delivery of Flash on mobile phones, on other platforms. You will see it on Windows Mobile.

Microsoft, if you recall, was also early to adopt Flash Lite for Windows Mobile, despite its parallel development of Flash-competitor Silverlight. So it’s not too surprising that it would be the first to run Flash 10 on Windows Mobile. Turner also indicates that an “Android port” is coming. (Update: In fact, it looks like the Android port is well underway. During today’s announcement, a demo of Flash running on the G1 was shown.)

But what about the iPhone, which famously doesn’t use Flash? (Although there’s been some talk of that happening). Turner will only say:

We are working on Flash on the iPhone, but it is really up to Apple

One of Apple’s objections to Flash is that it is a CPU hog and is not optimized for the ARM11 processors that power the iPhone. In what seems to be an effort to address that concern, Adobe will also be announcing a closer collaboration with ARM to accelerate the adoption of both Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR on ARM-powered devices.

Once that collaboration bears fruit, maybe we’ll finally see Flash on the iPhone. But I’d be willing to bet my iPhone that we’ll see it on Android phones first.

Though nearly the entire pre-flight process has been tweaked to make use of modern technologies, one outdated aspect still lingers: the tickets. Every single time I fly, I find myself checking the location where I put my tickets once every 3-4 minutes. Are they still there? Did I remember to zip up after I last checked? When I pulled my hand out, did the ticket sneak out? I’ve never lost a ticket, yet I consistently fear that I will. It’s just such an abnormal thing in our daily lives - when else are we given something to hang on to for a few hours that is so easy to lose or destroy, yet so significant in the success of our plans? Lose that ticket, and there’s a good chance queues and regulations might just make you miss your flight. Miss your flight, and you’ll be making up for it your entire trip.

Fortunately, the times are changing. As handset displays grow to higher and higher resolutions, functionality generally limited to ink and paper becomes possible. Scannable barcodes can easily be printed onto just about any device made within the last few years, opening the door to ticketless boarding via your cell phone’s display.

Continental was the first in the US to embrace this concept, back in May of this year. Now American Airlines has hopped on board with the launch of their Mobile Boarding Passes program. If you’re flying out of Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), or Orange County (SNA), you’re given the option to send a digital boarding pass to your cell phone via e-mail. The boarding pass contains a QR-code-ish bar code - security will scan this, and you’re on your way. Just remember to juice up your phone before heading to the airport!

Sure enough, we’re one day from the dead middle of the month, and here it is. This’ll be the third TouchWiz launch in the US (the others being the Delve on Alltel, and the Eternity launch on AT&T earlier this morning.)

Like the Alltel release, the US Cellular Delve packs a 3.5mm headset jack, full HTML browser, Bluetooth, and a 2.0 megapixel camera for stills and video behind a 3.0″ touchscreen. The Delve’s full retail price is $399.95 - sign up for a 2 year contract, and US Cellular will lop it down to $149.95, and tack on a $50 dollar mail-in rebate, bringing it down to $99.95.

It’s not quite the Samsung Omnia that folks are eagerly awaiting for, but it’s a step or two in that direction. Launched this morning for AT&T, the Samsung Eternity sports a 3.2″ touchscreen, haptic feedback for a dash of vibration with every touch, an accelerometer, a 3.0 megapixel camera, and all that good ol’ 3G connectivity.

While it may look the same up front due to the TouchWiz UI, the inch-for-inch match with the Omnia’s 3.2″ touchscreen, and the surprisingly similar rear casing, the Omnia it is not. Where as the Omnia is running WinMo 6.1, this one’ proprietary OS all the way down. While some might see the lack of WinMo as a benefit, most would see the absence of WiFi as a disappointment. Regardless - for $149.99 after contract and rebate, you still get some pretty solid bang for your buck.

Bam! Right off the bat, this morning brings not one, but two new Samsung phones to Verizon.

First up is the WinMo 6.1 powered Samsung Saga, pictured on right. For 200 bucks and a 2-year contract, you’ll walk away with a QWERTY keyboard, 2.2″ touchscreen, optical mouse, and support for Stereo bluetooth. They’ve also packed in WiFi (802.11b/g), quad-band radio, and a 2-megapixel camera with microSD support up to 16 gigs. This one should be on the shelves as of this morning.

Next up is the Samsung Renown, which is a bit less smartphone and a whole lot more brown. It’s got quad-band GSM to keep it tickin’ round the globe, a 2.0 megapixel shooter, stereo Bluetooth, microSD up to 8GB, and support for Vcast Music/Video. This one won’t hit the shelves till December 1st, at which point you can pick one up for $179.99 on a 2-year contract. Having a hard time figuring out what’s making this one so pricey? Us too.

Whenever people remember to use that camera on the back of their phone, what do they do with it? Do they go out into the wild and try to capture what Ansel Adams’ work would look like through a crappy VGA sensor? No. They go and take pictures of themselves with the bathroom mirror, or snap a shot of their drunken friends for later uploading and sharing. Recognizing this, Verizon has gone and removed a bit of the kludge from the process, teaming up with Photobucket.com to crank out an application for instant photo sharing from VZW handsets.

The application will set you back 3 bucks a month, and is available now through Verizon’s Get It Now catalog. Of course, you could always just use Photobucket’s long available mobile-to-email method and save a couple dollars a month, but I’m sure there are plenty of would-be uploaders out there who might be a bit mystified by anything but a purposed, spoon-fed application.

Hey, there it is!
Turns out, the first S60 device to hit AT&T in a long was just taking its sweet time to make it to the shelves. So what do you get for $70 bucks and a 2-year marriage to AT&T? A 2.0 megapixel camera, 2.2″ QVGA display, and support for AT&T Navigator, AT&T Mobile Music, and AT&T Video Share. Plus: it’s running S60, automatically putting it many bounds above the vast majority of $50-$100 flip phones.

With just about everyone pulling at their collars over the economy right now, more and more people are winding up on the chopping block. Amongst the many companies on layoff watch at the moment is Sprint; after bleeding out over 1.3 million customers over the last quarter, it’s pretty clear that Sprint was going to have to cut back their employee headcount.

Forced layoffs are no fun for anyone - Sprint knows that. Rather than dumping a big box of “We thank you for your time and dedication, but…” letters onto desks around the nation, Sprint is offering buyouts to an unspecified chunk of its employee base. Specific details of the buyout haven’t been disclosed so it’s not clear how enticing their offer might be, but employees have until December 3rd to jump ship. It all sounds nice and friendly, but being given the option to leave probably doesn’t feel a whole lot better than getting the axe.

Okay, fine. It won’t change your life. In fact, with its defining features being a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluetooth, it’s all pretty standard. It’s the first Alltel handset to feature Fastap “Press-to-Experience” shortcut keys tucked between the numbers on the keypad, which I suppose is pretty exciting if you’ve never owned a cell phone before. You can nab one in blue or red at Alltel.com or any Alltel spot for $49.99 beginning today.

From the details of the leak, it seems that Nokia is working on something they’re referring to internally as “Wahoo”, which looks to have been designed by taking a dash of BlackBerry Pearl Flip and throwing in a whole lot of Motorola RAZR.

Nothing too groundbreaking spec-wise, with its most notable feature being a 1/2 QWERTY keyboard similar to the SureType keyboards found on the BlackBerry Pearl devices. Beyond that, it’s got quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, dual-band HSDPA, assisted GPS, dual displays (2.0″ 240×320 internal, 1.36″ 128×160 external), and stereo Bluetooth.

Not even a whisper on a release date or price point yet, but all signs indicate that this one’s headed for AT&T.

Like the Touch HD, we’ll be missing out on this one.
With a Black Friday launch date, at least it’ll come in at a bargain price, right? Try $800 bucks. As of right now, the X1 is only planned to be up for sale as an unlocked handset through Sony Style stores and authorized Sony retailers, with preorders beginning November 13th. Sorry, Sony Ericsson - the X1 is a gorgeous piece that I’ve been gushing about for months, but I think I’ll skip this one so I can, you know, afford food.

With Windows Mobile 6.5 now pretty much a sure thing for 2009, the churn of the rumor mill is growing ever louder. Smartphone France has supposedly dug up some screenshots of the new operating system. As these shots will no doubt pop up week after week on forums around the intertubes until 6.5’s eventual release, we’ll go ahead and weigh in now: fake.

Signs of Shenanigans:

Start menu Windows icon: Looks like it was ripped out of the first Google Image Search for “Windows logo” by someone using the polygon selection tool while wearing a blindfold. It’s all sorts of chunked-up, but not in a way that JPEG compression might cause.

Clock, first image: Far, far off center and glowy blue? Pft.

Icons, both images: Why do the WiFi signal strength and battery meter icons switch places from screen to screen? Why is the “Today” icon ripped directly from Mac OS X? Why is the clock icon on the right so awkwardly small and showing a completely different time?

Text margins, both images: The margins of the soft key menu labels are all off - the gap on the left is significantly larger than the one on the right.

There are just too many mistakes that any first year graphic design student would catch. The whole thing just looks cheap and, well, fake.

It’s 8 am, and you’ve got a WebEx meeting at 8:30. Unfortunately, the kids need to be at school by 8:15, and it’s a 40 minute roundtrip to drop them off. Your options? Either you’re going to be hopping from coffee shop to coffee shop looking for parking lot WiFi, or the kids are playing hooky through first period today. PhoneTopp, a startup out of San Jose, California, has a new option, which they’re announcing at today’s Under the Radar conference: attending web conferences on your smartphone.

In a recent survey of over 15,000 web conference regulars, PhoneTopp found that over 62% of respondents wanted to be able to participate in a web conference through their smartphone. Unfortunately, current desktop conferencing solutions were a bit too bulky and processor intensive to be ported to run on the significantly less powerful hardware available in smartphone handsets, so Phonetopp took a different approach: cloud computing.

By passing web conference data through Amazon’s EC2 servers, PhoneTopp was able remove much of the rendering legwork from the handset and significantly lower bandwidth requirements. They’ve also modularized each element of the conference, freeing up screen real estate and further optimizing bandwidth - not paying attention to chat? Hide the chat pane, and that data won’t be sent until it’s required. With these optimizations in place, PhoneTopp’s able to send web conference data over 3G with a latency of right around 5 seconds.

Being that they built the solution from the ground up, they’re also able to add a few features unique to their offering. Amongst these is something they call “mobile rewind”. Miss a slide? PhoneTapp stores past slides, so you can peruse them at your liking without holding up the entire meeting.

Though they’re announcing the product today, PhoneTopp is going to spend another month or so polishing up their service before letting anyone poke and prod at it. After seeing a demo of the product, I can say that the whole thing seems dead simple: Answer a phone call, launch the application, and you’re in. Want to see for yourself? Head to PhoneTopp.com and sign up for their beta - private beta begins in December, and early adopters get 3 months of the $8 per month service for free. Public beta will begin sometime in the first quarter of next year.

PhoneTopp will support Microsoft Live Meeting and Webex conferences during the beta periods, with support for Adobe and Citrix conferencing on the way. Device-wise, they plan on supporting the iPhone, Windows Mobile, and BlackBerry devices.
